4 essential ways to de-clutter your home

De-cluttering, the task seems mammoth, yet if you’re selling your home it’s one of the most worthwhile jobs you can undertake.  To begin with, it will help you when you come to present your home for sale, but even better than that, it will save you time and a significant amount of stress when you start to pack for your move.  Let’s face it, who wants to move one pile of ‘stuff’ from one home to the next? You want to start your life in your new home with just the stuff you need, and clutter-free.


To give you a helping hand we have put together what we believe are four essential ways to de-clutter your home.


Think small


If you look at your home in its entirety you may start to lose the will to live when you think about the task ahead of you.  Do a bit at a time and you will find the process a lot more manageable, and also quite satisfying.  Either give yourself a time limit or, as we prefer, split it into manageable spaces, perhaps a room at a time, or maybe into items, such as books.


The 4-box method


We came across this method a while ago and we can’t advocate it strongly enough.  The process is simple; you just need four boxes or bags:

  • Keep
  • Throw away
  • Charity
  • Storage

As you take each room or item, you decide in which box to place things in.  If you find your keep box is full and the rest are empty, then we think you need to read our next piece of advice…


Be honest


We all do it, we all keep things that, if we’re completely honest with ourselves, we don’t need.  Let’s take a look at your wardrobes, for example: can you honestly say that you wear everything in there?  One tip that Oprah Winfrey advocates is that you place all your clothes on hangers facing a certain way, then when you wear something you turn the hanger around.  After 6 months you will be able to see what you do actually wear, and what you don’t.


Japanese organisation consultant and author Marie Kondo prefers a more honest approach to de-cluttering.  She states: “The best way to choose what to keep and what to throw away is to take each item in one’s hand and ask: “Does this spark joy?” If it does, keep it. If not, dispose of it. This is not only the simplest but also the most accurate yardstick by which to judge.”


Nostalgia is not your friend, and neither is holding onto things ‘just in case’.  Be honest: will you truly need it in your new home?  Only you know the answer.




All the best de-cluttering in the world will be pointless if you don’t have adequate storage. By ensuring everything has its place, not only will it be easier to find when you need it, but it will also keep your home clutter-free for longer.  Small boxes or containers can also be displayed, which, if done properly, can make a great feature.


Getting started


People tend not to start this process until their house is on the market, but we say the earlier the better.  Start when the thought of selling enters your head; that way, you won’t be in a mad rush should you wish to de-clutter before your home is for sale.
